BodySchool : Centering and Connecting
28-29th March 2020 – postponed

In this workshop, we’ll work with identifying and moving from our belly centres – the hara or dantian in the martial arts. When we organise our movement from this place it becomes powerful and potent – we know where we are. And connecting from here into the world brings a sense of ease and lightness – we know where we are going.

We will work primarily with the Feldenkrais Method as a means to developing our sense of centeredness. One of Moshe Feldenkrais idea’s behind his method was to be able to make the kind of awareness developed through practicing martial arts, of which he was a master, available to people who are not drawn to or physically able to practice them – in other words to everyone.

I also draw on the practices of experiential anatomy, ideokinesis and the spatial orientation work of Hubert Godard.

The classes and gentle and easy and suitable for anyone to join; they could be as useful for dancers, sports people and martial artists, as much as for senior citizens, meditators or anyone recovering from some kind of injury or ill health.

As in all BodySchool workshops, mp3 recordings of all Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement classes will be provided free so that participants can listen at home to the classes presented in the workshop.

The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais method is a far-reaching multi-layered somatic educational system which offers to improve the quality, range and comfort with which we move. Since we are moving every moment of our lives, improving how we move can improve all that we do. At its core is a radical way of thinking about learning. We learn to how to learn better.

The challenge in a Feldenkrais class is to pay attention to ourselves as we move. We gain in flexibility and strength not through stretching or exerting ourselves, but by working slowly and gently in a way that enables us to listen to what it is we are actually doing.

It is through refining our ability to sense what it is that we are doing while we do it that we educate ourselves to act in better coordinated, more efficient and graceful ways. more …
