BodySchool : Making friends with scoliosis
Scoliosis is most commonly thought of as a lateral asymmetry of the spine that shows up as a sideways curve. But considered three-dimensionally, it’s more like a twisting or coiling of the spine that produces the characteristic two-dimensional curve.
Since nobody has a perfectly straight spine, and we are neither structurally nor functionally symmetrical, then fundamentally we all have scoliosis.
Medically speaking, a diagnosis of scoliosis is simply a matter how much scoliosis is present and if it is problematic. Interestingly, while scoliosis can be caused by a congenital defect of the spine, disease, or accidents, over eighty per cent of diagnoses are idiopathic (of unknown cause). Research has shown that it is not a genetic disorder.
I see scoliosis more as an inevitable condition of growth within the field of gravity of our asymmetrical selves. In this workshop, we will work in detail with Feldenkrais’ Pelvic Clock as a way to become aware of our own particular scoliosis. We will feed ourselves kinesthetically to support our growth towards more ease in how we move through our lives together with our scoliosis.
BODYSCHOOL is a workshop series that applies somatic and postmodern dance practices to everyday life situations. The workshops move fluidly between lecture and class formats maintaining a sense of lightness, ease and good humour. There is nothing in these workshops to get right. The aim instead is to foster a physical dialogue with ourselves and the environment in which we become empowered to be our own experts.
My work is founded upon my interest to create the conditions to meet ourselves afresh with a childlike sense of wonder. I try do this through engaging playfully with our innate curiosity unhindered by expectation. This attitude, as much as the material itself, is what I offer through my work.
